68456_686433198076352_1639633397_nThe Falcon Ridge Ski Slopes are well-known for their music scene, with just about every employee at the hill being a singer, songwriter, or musician. If you’ve ever been in the ski chalet for live music on Sunday afternoons or during a concert, you’ll know this for a fact.  And if you want to check out their music scene and get a true taste of winter in the Whiteshell, then the Snowdance Festival of Music and Winter is what you’re looking for. Now in its fourth year, the annual festival is scheduled for this upcoming weekend, Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18. Each year the event seems to keep getting bigger, and this year the folks at Falcon Ridge are geared up for yet another fun weekend of music and outdoor activities. Even the weather is supposed to cooperate! 1545124_686432894743049_1937661563_n 1528495_686434858076186_1639403337_nThe fun all starts on Saturday afternoon live music in the chalet and several outdoor activities. IMG_0535 copyWinter is officially here… And we Manitobans can make it through this. Winter is what you make it, and the Whiteshell has endless opportunities for fun winter activities in the most beautiful and scenic place in Manitoba. Whiteshell Business: Nite Hawk Cafe

The Nite Hawk Cafe is a family run business that has been a popular place in West Hawk Lake since 1970. Ellie Zimmerman and her husband, Harvey, purchased the restaurant over 40 years ago. The Nite Hawk Cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and includes a licensed dining room, covered patio, and a take-out and ice cream window. Sharon Morrison started to work at the Nite Hawk at a young age and now carries on running the family business along with her husband, Bruce Morrison.
NH1This past year was a big year for the Nite Hawk Cafe as the business continued to evolve. The cottage-country restaurant got its official claim to fame when it was listed in MacLean’s Magazine as one of the 10 Great Canadian Pit Stops as voted by readers. In the spring of 2013 the patio was renovated to include a custom covered screen room. This renovation has enhanced the patio’s aesthetics and provides a relaxing, bug-free outdoor dining space that can be enjoyed in rain or shine.

This year is also the first year that the Nite Hawk is open all winter-long to serve the locals, winter cottagers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers, and winter day trippers each week from Thursday to Sunday. Hours for winter 2014 are Thursday & Friday 10am-7pm, Saturday 9am-7pm and Sunday 9am-4pm. The Nite Hawk is also connected to the South Whiteshell Trail, and makes for a great cross-country ski start/end point. Parking for trail-users is provided courtesy of the Nite Hawk Cafe, and the restaurant is the perfect place for après-ski food and drink.

While the restaurant has evolved throughout the years, the Nite Hawk still serves the same delicious homemade gourmet burgers and fries. The menu now ranges from burgers and fries to healthy wraps, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, and much more. The restaurant and patio are now licensed and there are many signature drinks including ‘Sharon’s Signature Caesar’ and the ‘Mucho Mojito’.

Every Thursday in the spring, summer, and fall the Nite Hawk has ‘Steak Nite’ that features delicious Certified 10oz Angus New York steak barbecued on the patio. The steak dinner includes a baked potato with all the fixings, a deluxe salad bar with three to four different salad options. Sautéed mushrooms, shrimp and scallop skewers and blue cheese are available! Be sure to drop by when local musician Doug Edmonds performs on the patio in the summer.

One of the best ski trails in the Whiteshell is the South Whiteshell Trail, also a great trail for walking, running, and biking during the summer. The South Whiteshell trail can take you from the the Nite Hawk Cafe in West Hawk, through spruce and pine trees and down a scenic trail to Faloma Beach Marina and then onto the Falcon Lake Community Club. The trail also includes a loop to the isolated McHugh Lake, which then loops you back to the West Hawk townsite. The South Whiteshell Trail, which is part of the Trans Canada Trail, also has a warmup shelter perched at the top of a hill approximately halfway between West Hawk and Faloma.

The Falcon Ridge Ski Hill also provides a great network of groomed ski trails that start at the ski hill, including one loop that even takes you into High Lake. The Falcon Ridge trails have a variety of terrain including anything from a 1 km loop on Falcon Lake to a 7.5 km ski to High Lake and back. There is also a new trail connecting High Lake to the Falcon townsite along the south shore of the lake. Falcon Ridge is even home to one of the two biathlon courses in Manitoba and hosts several biathlon races throughout the winter. Check out the map of the Falcon Ridge trails below:
